Frankfurt 9.3.1961 Annikki Toikka-Karvonen:
The artist name that was most often encountered in the Finnish pavilion at the Frankfurt Spring Fair was undoubtedly Tapio Wirkkala. His design work was represented by four major companies, his name appeared next to art glass, utility glass, light bulbs, two different types of lighting series, silver and stainless steel. But Wirkkala’s familiar profile and pipe were also encountered elsewhere in the fairgrounds: on the second floor of the newly completed large industrial arts hall, Rosenthal-Domus Gmbh presented a small, highly selected collection of its most artistically high-quality individual objects, among whose designers Rosenthal himself was the first to mention Tapio Wirkkala. Others included the Swedish Count Sigvard Bernadotte, the Danish Hans Hansen, the French Raymond Peynet and the Danish Björn Wiinblad – all very distinctive in their personalities, top-class European design talents. With the help of Domus group, Rosenthal strives to create individual art objects in a time of uniformity and mass production that would give a person’s living environment a personal touch and human warmth as a counterbalance to all the cold and soulless, albeit necessary, objects that technology produces to furnish our homes.
